LoTs of Kool fonTz! WowZZers!!

The Google Font Directory is a great resource for using alternate typefaces on the web fairly easily. It has some great quality fonts like Droid Serif, Ubuntu, Orbitron and Philosopher which can greatly enhance a web document’s legibility and intent.

Recently, they’ve also made available to the masses some bespoke retro/comic/decorative fonts like Font Diner and Coming Soon. These ‘special occasion’ fonts most definitely have their uses (just as the reviled Comic Sans does) but putting such a wide variety of such fonts into the hands of almost everyone just frightens me. I fear it’ll only a matter of time before we see entire documents typeset in Irish Growler and presentations using only Unkempt on Google Docs.
