This is a dramatic photo of a “Libyan rebel fighter [scrambling] from a ditch carrying a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) to reach the battle scene with forces loyal to leader Moamar Gaddafi, just a few kilometres outside the oil town of Ras Lanuf on March 9, 2001”. A picture of a brave man fighting for his freedom taken at great risk by a daring photographer.
And all I/we noticed first is the Nike shoes. Is consumerism so baked into our consciousness that we are numb to the gravity of the situation caught by the camera? Or are we celebrating finding a true hero wearing Nikes, who is unlike the professional sportsmen and women who get paid quite a bit of cash to appear with their kicks?
I hope the guy in the picture lives to enjoy his freedom.
