My neverending quest for a free iTunes music player replacement might have reached a very satisfactory conclusion with the redesigned Vox music player. From FLACs to MP3s, it plays almost any audio format. It has built-in scrobbling support for Last.fm (though I wish it’d support Libre.fm too). The sparse, minimal interface gets out of the way but the equalizer buried a bit too far in and I do find myself wishing for a larger album art display.
I had the older version of Vox on my Leopard-powered Macbook at home and this new update is streets ahead (though it requires OS X 10.7 to run). I like this new version so much, the “if it ain’t broke” guy in me is actually considering upgrading to Mountain Lion just to get the new Vox working.
